Corporate and Private Client
Our aim is the creation and preservation of clients' wealth for current and future generations, whilst "achieving the right balance" through reducing tax and other costs and minimising risk. Structures and services are tailor-made to meet clients' individual objectives whilst recognising the need for discretion and confidentiality.
We balance traditional methods against innovative ones, developing creative solutions that blend the best of the old and new. A key factor is the flexibility to meet continually changing circumstances.
Trust, Corporate and Private Client Services
'Achieving the right balance'
is our goal when providing clients with an effective solution
to managing their affairs. Through the integration
of our trust and tax practices with our wealth management
businesses, we
provide an international service to help preserve and enhance
our clients' wealth. We aim to combine professionalism
with efficiency, continuity of service and personal style
with the breadth and depth of resources you would expect
from a global financial group.
We employ over 300 staff in our British Isles trust operations in Jersey, Guernsey and London, more than 80 of whom are professionally qualified* and with many others studying for such qualifications. Our intention is to deliver "expertise in execution".
Clients
- Internationally wealthy families
- International executives and entrepreneurs
- International professionals in sports, entertainment and fashion
- Corporate groups
Opportunities
- Recent decades have seen dramatic changes in the financial world with an unprecedented increase in both private and corporate wealth.
- Long cycles of economic expansion have created more wealthy individuals and corporations, with increasingly varied sources of income and assets.
- Conventional barriers to the mobility of capital have been relaxed and, in many cases, removed.
- Both corporate groups and families are increasingly mobile and thus wealth is increasingly international.
*Defined as chartered or certified accountants,
chartered secretaries, lawyers, holders of the Institute
of Bankers' trustee diploma, members of the Society of Trust
and Estate Practitioners and members of the Institute of
Taxation.
Challenges
- Ever more complex anti-avoidance tax legislation in onshore jurisdictions aimed at:
- Domestic planning
- Planning involving offshore companies and trusts
- Individuals and companies moving overseas thus avoiding tax liabilities in their "home
jurisdiction".
- Increasing regulation in, and transnational threats to, offshore finance centres.
- Legal conflicts where individuals and companies from one jurisdiction move to or acquire
assets in another jurisdiction with a different legal system. Examples include the difficulties
common law domiciliaries encounter with forced heirship and, in civil law jurisdictions,
the non-recognition of trusts.
- Double taxation where individuals and companies move to or acquire assets in another jurisdiction.
- The widening scope and complexity of litigation, including multi-jurisdictional litigation.
Our Response
- Restructuring domestic and offshore trusts and companies as well as direct assets held by
individuals, providing solutions to transnational challenges, delivered from the most
appropriate jurisdictions.
- Planning across the interface between corporate and private wealth, for instance trusts
established by corporate groups for the benefit of individual employees and their dependents.
- Creating "hybrid" structures, which are viewed differently in the jurisdiction of origin to
the jurisdiction of destination.
The Key Advantages
- We have significant multi-jurisdictional experience including covering the overlap between
common and civil law systems.
- Continuity is a hallmark of our approach. Our trust directors have an average of 15 years'
service, maintaining client service teams with unbroken knowledge acting for a particular
family or corporate group.
- We place particular emphasis upon the rapport between the individual or family and the
director and administrators acting for them with our approach being set to match a client's
individual style and preferences. We have always run "family offices", long before this approach
became fashionable.
- We have a wealth of traditional trustee skills and a deep understanding of the fiduciary
role, both in theory and in practice as it applies to individuals, including minors, families
and charities as well as to corporate clients.
Our Approach

A Lasting Relationship
We aim to develop relationships with both the original clients and their heirs and successors.
We continue to believe that the early creation of trusts, so long as they are at least tax neutral, can be advantageous in providing asset protection possibilities and estate planning flexibility spanning the generations. The drafting and execution of wills provides complementary protection for assets retained personally, whether temporarily or permanently.
External Advisers
Clients should always seek external legal and tax advice on any arrangement, both when created and thereafter during its existence. We are distinguished from many of our competitors by employing our own taxation, estate planning and regional specialists. Their involvement is complementary to the appointment of external advisers thus enhancing and giving substance to structures.
Services We Provide
- Establishment of trusts and companies both offshore and onshore.
- Provision of trustees and directors, and company secretarial services.
- Asset restructuring.
- Escrow arrangements.
- An ongoing administrative and reporting role to ensure the successful implementation of structures.
- Estate planning and executorship.
- Assuming responsibility for existing structures.
- Regular reports and review meetings to provide the opportunity for timely adjustment to
changing circumstances.
Local Knowledge
Our teams of trust professionals include regional specialists serving clients from different geographic regions, the UK, US, Continental Europe, Canada, Southern Africa and the Middle and Far East. They visit regularly the regions in which they specialise and maintain current knowledge of local conditions and developments. In addition, we provide a comprehensive estate planning and administration service for Jersey and Guernsey residents.
Our Specialist Services
- Employee benefits and structured finance administration.
- Through RBC Regent Tax Consultants Limited, which is
based in our Jersey office, we provide a tax planning and
compliance service concentrating on UK and US personal
tax with an international component and Jersey and Guernsey
domestic taxation.

Our Investment Approach
We maintain a large, quality-controlled database of investment managers, which we draw upon whenever appropriate to meet clients' needs.
We select and monitor the performance of investment managers. Part of the process is to ensure that the form of investment is appropriate for a particular structure which can be vital for its fiscal and estate planning effectiveness. The form of investment can include portfolios of investments, mutual funds and insurance bonds.
